Another contender has stepped into the music identification space, hoping to challenge its heavyweight champion Shazam. MTV and Gracenote have worked on an iOS app called MTV Artists, which matches music playing in the real world to audio fingerprints in Gracenote’s MusicID database. The app will serve up album artwork, videos, song clips, biographies and also interviews and performances from MTV and VH1, as well as tweets and concert dates. The app’s launch – with Android to follow – comes as Gracenote continues to build out its MusicID business. The company says the database is currently receiving more than 15bn queries a month through partnerships with the likes of iTunes, Rhapsody and Amazon.
