Could Turkish music industry body MÜ-YAP dethrone gaming star PewDiePie at the top of the YouTube charts in November? It’s made a good start: the MÜ-YAP channel was the most-watched on YouTube in the first week of this month, pulling in 46.8m views of its music videos. That’s ahead of PewDiePie’s 42.7m and One Direction’s 38.7m according to industry site TubeFilter‘s chart. MÜ-YAP is traditionally in the top three of the monthly rankings, but topping them would be an impressive feat – and yet more backing for MÜ-YAP’s strategy of focusing on YouTube as a way to promote Turkish music globally. Also interesting: TubeFilter’s stats show that the 50 biggest YouTube channels last week generated 979.3m views, and by our reckoning 441.2m of those came from music video channels – a 45% share. Don’t take this as a percentage for the whole of YouTube, since the long (LONG) tail is unpredictable. But it’s a fairly impressive stat in terms of music’s importance to YouTube nonetheless.
