Xbox One

The web was buzzing yesterday with claims that the new Xbox One console will include free streaming music courtesy of an ad-supported Xbox Music service. The claims were based on an authoritative source: Xbox director of product planning Albert Penello, who when asked on Twitter whether people would be able to use Xbox Music for free on the Xbox One replied “yes. You don’t have to subscribe, but you will get periodic Ads”. Yesterday, though, Penello retracted the claim himself: “I was wrong about Music on XboxOne: You get 15 free song plays then need Music Pass for ad-free streaming. No ad-supported streaming. Sorry!” The thought of Microsoft offering free streaming wasn’t so startling though: Xbox Music is already free and ad-supported for PC, laptop and tablet owners running its Windows software.
