There were a flurry of claims and counterclaims on the blogosphere overnight about the relative scale of Snapchat and Facebook. It was triggered by CNET‘s report that Snapchat now processes 400m snaps every day, up from 350m in September. Cue comparisons with Facebook’s last public stat that its users share 350m photos a day. Snapchat’s bigger than Facebook! But wait just a second. BuzzFeed has a very good post debunking the hype, pointing out that Snapchat’s figure is merely photos *received* by users, with the company’s CEO confirming that 88% of snaps are sent to a single recipient (so 12% are sent to an unknown number of multiple recipients). And there’s been some fuzzy maths since: BuzzFeed’s calculations suggest 8m monthly active Snapchat users, while TechCrunch‘s middle estimate is more like 51.2m daily active users. The short answer: nobody knows. But let’s not let a little thing like that get in the way of a multi-billion dollar valuation…
