We’re noticing a pattern in some of the latest BitTorrent Bundle partnerships announced by the technology company: big artists, but the actual content isn’t their crown jewels. Plain White T’s released a music video, Madonna an anti-censorship film, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor an e-book sampler, and Linkin Park a piece of branded music software. These artists aren’t ‘releasing their music on BitTorrent’ as some reports interpret it, even though their experimentation with the bundle format is interesting. Such is the case for the latest example: Lady Gaga. She’s not sticking ARTPOP on the torrents: instead she’s working with Vice Media to distribute a making-of video for the video to recent single ‘Do What U Want’. A mini-documentary, in other words, albeit one with a new Gaga interview included. Nice for fans, but more the sort of thing that might have previously been stuck up on YouTube, rather than a big leap into a disruptive new music distribution format that it might be portrayed as.
