Broken Bells is the collaboration between producer Danger Mouse and The Shins frontman James Mercer, with a second album due to be released in January. In advance of that, there’s an ambitious science fiction short film released in two parts on YouTube: Part One: The Angel And The Fool and Part Two: Holding On For Life. The film is based on a short story written by Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton), with its cinematography based on “images of Barbarella and Logan’s Run, that sort of late ‘60s/early ‘70s science fiction” sent to its director by Mercer. It stars known actors – Kate Mara and Anton Yelchin. “It all comes back to the Broken Bells album and the feelings they evoke. I just wanted to tell a melancholy love story in outer space,” director Jacob Gentry tells Complex. “I hope that people enjoy the story and the simplicity of it. I hope that it makes people want to seek out the music of Broken Bells. That’s the driving force behind it. Their music is brilliant.”
