Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP app doesn’t appear to (yet) be setting the world alight, but another branch of Universal Music Group is trying something different with the album-as-app concept. Universal’s Catalogue division has released The Who Tommy, an iPad app that describes itself as a “digital box set” for the remastered version of the 1969 album. The app is a free download with song samples, artwork, videos filmed at a 1969 gig in London, a Tommy pinball game, and the first chapter of a new book about The Who by Richard Barnes. This is very much a freemium strategy though: fans are encouraged to buy the album from iTunes to play within the app, while also paying £7.49 to unlock the rest of the book.
