A mobile game to watch in the run-up to Christmas is Band Stars. It was released today for iPhone and iPad by Halfbrick Studios, the company behind the hugely popular Fruit Ninja game. Its new title is very different though: a free-to-play strategy game about forming a band and storming the charts. “Set your sights on world stardom and make your way to the top of the local, national and global charts. Discover each of the 50 super-cool Band Stars characters and complete over 200 unique challenges,” as the App Store listing puts it. People can compete against friends, play in different genres, and the whole thing is funded by in-app purchases. What it lacks for now, as far as we can tell, are any partnerships with labels and/or artists – but that could be a road that Halfbrick chooses to go down. If the game takes off, we suspect some labels will be getting in touch with the company about possible opportunities, anyway. That said, we’ve been here before back in 2011 with a game called My Star, which never really took off. Perhaps Band Stars can do better.
