It’d be ridiculous to take the first 2-3 weeks of sales for Sony and Microsoft’s new games consoles as a guide to their success in the longer term – not that this is putting some games sites off trying. The truth? Both consoles are selling pretty well. Sony sold more than 2.1m PlayStation 4’s in the device’s first 16 days on sale, and Microsoft announced yesterday that Xbox One has passed the 2m mark 18 days after its own launch. Sony wins!!!1! But both devices are currently in a limited number of countries – PS4 more than Xbox One – so it’s way too early to gauge wider demand. As we’ve noted, both consoles come with their own streaming/cloud music services: Xbox Music and Sony Music Unlimited, which are getting a shot in the arm by their integration into the next-gen consoles. It’s likely to be the new year before we get any sense of whether the early adopters are as keen on music as they are on games.
