Next week, the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas will showcase all manner of new devices, apps and digital services. Of particular interest to the music industry should be Google’s plans to make a big push into in-car entertainment through Android. The Wall Street Journal reported that Google will announce a partnership with Audi at CES, with plans to work with other manufacturers too – competing directly with Apple’s “iOS in the Car” initiative. “The car is becoming the ultimate mobile device,” Gartner analyst Thilo Koslowski told the Wall Street Journal. Music rightsholders are hoping that smarter cars will mean more demand for subscription music services, so the Google/Apple competition should be good news.
