
2013 was a fun year for ephemeral-messaging app Snapchat, as it turned down multibillion-dollar acquisition offers from Facebook and Google. The company ended the year with an interesting update: new Instagram-style filters, but also a ‘Replay’ option to review photos and videos one more time, and an option to set up to seven best friends. Shades of old-school MySpace there, although it may also be useful for the growing number of musicians using Snapchat for marketing. 2014 has started off badly for Snapchat though: hackers exposed 4.6m usernames and their telephone numbers in an effort to prove that Snapchat’s privacy protection is slack. “You wouldn’t want to eat at a restaurant that spends millions on decoration, but barely anything on cleanliness…”
