British politician Mike Weatherley, recently appointed as IP advisor to the Prime Minister, wrote a piece outlining his views on how best to tackle online piracy. It included some stern words for the creative industries and their “failure to keep pace with the digital age… The music industry, for example, has spent years saying ‘no’ instead of ‘how?’,” wrote Weatherley, before turning his attention to responsibility on the part of ISPs. “Government must back up industry by putting the necessary enforcement mechanisms into place. This would include holding Internet Service Providers responsible if they knowingly facilitate illegal downloading practices and do not take steps to stop this form of piracy.”
