Expect some more grumbling from marketers this week over changes made by Facebook to its news feed algorithm: the social network is downgrading text updates from Pages in favour of text updates from people’s friends. “The latest update to News Feed ranking treats text status updates from Pages as a different category to text status updates from friends,” explains product manager Chris Turitzin, citing research indicating that when Facebook users see more status updates from friends, they write more status updates themselves. When they see more status updates from Pages, the same effect doesn’t happen. Cue algorithm change. “Page admins can expect a decrease in the distribution of their text status updates, but they may see some increases in engagement and distribution for other story types.” We’ll see what the impact is on reach and engagement for music Page updates in the coming days and weeks.
