Music analytics firm Next Big Sound has published its end-of-year review for 2013, claiming that it tracked 6.1bn new fans of musicians on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud,
Spotify, Rdio, Pandora and Last.fm, following 5.7bn in 2012 (obviously, this isn’t unique individuals – each fan will be counted multiple times for multiple services and artists). Next Big Sound tracked 223.3bn streams on YouTube, Vevo, SoundCloud, Spotify, Rdio, Vimeo and Last.fm last year, up from 93bn in 2012, although the company stresses a lot of this is due to its addition of Spotify data last year. Among the findings elsewhere in the report is the popularity of YouTube-born artists on that service: Boyce Avenue, Matty B, Lindsey Sterling and others all make the top 10, ahead of established acts.
