Early this year, we reported on Gracenote’s plans to launch Rhythm, a music recommendations API for internet radio that’ll be going head to head with The Echo Nest (Bulletin, 3-Jan-14). Now the company is bolstering its capabilities ahead of launch with a partnership with music analytics firm Next Big Sound. The theory: Gracenote Rhythm will tap into Next Big Sound’s data on “popular and emerging artists” to offer recommendations for new tracks, as well as music based on an individual user’s preferences. “We now have the right blend of Gracenote trend data, broader industry analytics and play data to build out the most robust and accurate recommendation and discovery platform available on the market today,” says Gracenote president Stephen White. Developers and Gracenote customers will get their hands on the Rhythm API next month, which is when we’ll find out how it compares to the competition.
