Electric vehicle maker Tesla has announced a deal to integrate streaming music service Rdio into its dashboard in Europe, matching an existing partnership with Slacker Radio in the US. It’s relatively small beans in the bigger scheme of things: Tesla is an exciting company in terms of technology, but still small in terms of market share. However, its CEO Elon Musk’s comments on why Tesla plumped for Rdio are more interesting: “Spotify is a good option. You could play it through the Bluetooth,” he told a meeting in Amsterdam, according to GigaOm. “Initially, Spotify wouldn’t work with us to integrate it into the car. In the long term, that might change.” Spotify is certainly interested in getting into cars – its Ford partnership announced a year ago is evidence of that – but it seems Tesla wasn’t quite the right fit for the company. At least for now.
