Sometimes, a stat comes along that reminds us of the place services we think are huge have in the wider scheme of things. Here’s one: Twitter has 184m monthly active mobile users, which has generally been held up as impressive. Yet a series of talking animal apps from developer Outfit7 – Talking Tom and Friends – has 46m more. The developer said yesterday that the apps, spearheaded by squeaky feline Talking Tom Cat, now have 230m monthly active users after 1.5bn downloads across iOS, Android and Windows Phone. That’s up from 170m monthly active users in June 2013, when the series passed 1bn downloads. There’s even a music angle here: Outfit7 worked with Disney on a series of YouTube videos, including a song – ‘You Get Me’ – which has been watched more than 151m times. “Talking Tom and Friends is one of the only global brands to achieve download billionaire status, while also being strong in both entertainment and games,” said Outfit7 COO Alessandro Traverso. So now you know: talking cats: bigger than Twitter.
