Erstwhile Spice Girl Victoria Beckham has been signed up by Skype as it looks to distinguish itself from Google Hangouts as a celebrity-centric marketing channel. The Collaboration Project website, set up by Skype, will host the Five Years – The Victoria Beckham Fashion Story microsite that explains how Skype has influenced Beckham’s business. She will also do a Q&A on there. That’s all well and good, you might ask, but where’s the music? That’s something Skype is saying it has coming soon – alongside a focus on movies. “What we are not doing is showcasing superfluously the capability of what we do,” says Jackie Lee-Joe, marketing director at Skype, in what must rank as the most convoluted press statement ever issued by anyone at any point in history. “We’ve got a combination of Skype as a collaboration and enabling tool and then we use Skype’s capability in terms of instant messaging and group video calling and video messaging to engage a global audience and get them actively involved in the story. We’ve got a combination of elements that drive this partnership that might be just a little bit different to what Google Hangouts is doing.” And there, in a very real sense, you have it.
