In the US, iTunes Radio is currently available as a section within the iOS Music app, but Apple may be planning to break it out as a standalone app according to a report by 9 to 5 Mac. “The Cupertino company is now testing iTunes Radio as a standalone application with iOS 8,” it suggests, referring to the next update to Apple’s smartphone and tablet operating system – likely to be announced this summer then released in the Autumn. “As a tab in the already-existing Music app, iTunes Radio has not received a promoted presence on iOS, and this likely has deterred growth for the service in terms of advertising revenue and usage. As a standalone application, users will be able to more quickly access iTunes Radio.” There are already previous examples of this strategy: Apple separated out its podcasts and video elements of iTunes into their own apps, for example. The same article suggests Apple is working hard on launching the service in Canada, New Zealand and the UK in the coming months.
