Shakira-Shakira.-2014-1500x1500

Now, here’s a surprise. Swedish gamer PewDiePie is usually unassailable at the top of the most-watched YouTube channels chart, but in February’s rankings from industry site Tubefilter the stats – not to mention the hips – don’t lie. Music star Shakira had the most popular YouTube channel in the world last month, notching up 258.7m views during February. That’s up 229% month-on-month thanks to the global success of her ‘Can’t Remember to Forget You’ video with Rihanna, which was released on 30 January, and is up to 189m views at the time of writing. It’s a reminder of how one big video (see also: Miley Cyrus) can spike a music channel on YouTube. Also popular in February from the music biz were Katy Perry (182.6m views and fourth place overall in Tubefilter’s chart), Spinnin Records (136.2m / 7th), Justin Bieber (120.1m / 8th) and Beyoncé (119.7m / 10th). Vevo accounted for 17 of the top 100 YouTube channels in February, with Warner Music Group accounting for another three. One last interesting point: the seeming decline of Turkish channel Muyap, down in 14th spot with 103.1m views in February.
