De La Soul’s Trugoy has been talking about the band’s decision to give away their entire back catalogue as free downloads to fans, in exchange for email addresses. He described the numbers as “insane, I’m afraid to say it… I’m not really allowed to, but I’ll say I was expecting it to be somewhere between 15,000 and 25,000 people. Man, you can multiply that by whatever number you can throw in the air, so it was ridiculous”. Although the quote that made us smile was this: “I thought it was really cool. We had an opportunity to speak to our attorneys, and, you know, in hindsight it was maybe not the smartest thing to do…” Still, Trugoy says that the giveaway has energised his band, which is currently working on a pair of new albums. And for all his protestations that the giveaway was just a fun thing to do rather than a calculated campaign, De La Soul now have that ‘ridiculous’ number of email addresses for their mailing list when the time comes to promote the new music.
