We’re very much fond of François & The Atlas Mountains for musical reasons, but the band’s new album also has an innovative app to accompany it. Released for iPhone by label Domino Records, it’s called Piano Ombre and promises “a new way to experience the band’s music, including access to exclusive tracks”. 24 tracks, to be specific, all unlocked through a feature called “Sun Tracker” designed to get fans snapping photos of the sun, adding filters and sharing them – unlocking a different song every hour of the day. The full version of the app costs £7.49 from Apple’s App Store, and includes full tracks from the album, with a redeemable digital download of the album also sent to their email address – something we haven’t seen Apple allow before, given its preference for artists to push fans to the iTunes Store. There’s also a ‘Lite’ version of the app, with 90-second samples and buttons to buy the album. Both also include lyrics, guitar chords and handwritten explanations of tracks by frontman Frànçois Marry.
