Facebook has already had one go at competing with ephemeral-messaging app Snapchat: its Poke app was a prominent flop. Now the social network is coming back for another go, having failed to buy Snapchat in the meantime. Facebook released – and then quickly pulled – an app called Slingshot on iOS yesterday. It invited people to shoot a photo or video of “whatever you’re up to” then “sling” it to friends, who can then unlock each piece of content by slinging their own in return. Why pull the app? It wasn’t meant to be released just yet. “Earlier today, we accidentally released a version of Slingshot, a new app we’re working on,” explained Facebook. “With Slingshot, you’ll be able to share everyday moments with lots of people at once. It’ll be ready soon and we’re excited for you to try it out.” We suspect some artists will be trying it too, once it’s been released.
