When Apple bought Beats, industry thoughts quickly turned to a likely battle for exclusives with Beats Music’s streaming music rivals. We haven’t quite seen that yet in terms of big albums – we suspect that’ll change by the end of the year – but yesterday saw the service bag an exclusive remix from Jay-Z. It’s a remix of ‘Jungle‘ by X Ambassadors and Jamie N Commons – complete with Mr Beyoncé contributing a new verse – used as the soundtrack for Beats’ latest World Cup-themed headphones ad. The original (i.e. unremixed) song has been available on iTunes for a week, but Beats is trumpeting the fact that the remix is exclusive to Beats Music for the next seven days. Relatively small beans as exclusives go, but likely a sign of bigger things to come. One thought: Apple now has its own release path to pitch for labels and artists: launch on iTunes, then on Beats Music, and only later on rival services.
