Music publishers and multi-channel networks (MCNs) have had an interesting relationship over the last couple of years, with publishers often complaining about MCNs’ lack of licensing deals for songs covered by their artists. We Are The Hits is different: an MCN that actually began life within a publisher – Sony/ATV – before being spun out as an independent company by founder Larry Mills. Now the company has its first deals with companies other than Sony/ATV: a licensing deal with Kobalt and a distribution deal with lyrics website MetroLyrics. YouTubers signed to We Are The Hits will now be able to cover songs in Kobalt’s catalogue, with the company getting a cut of the ad revenues around those covers. We Are The Hits claims 130m monthly views on YouTube according to Billboard.
