Last year, Spotify launched a new series of web features called Spotify Landmark, promising to tell “the story behind some of the greatest moments in music, told by the people who made them” (Bulletin, 19-Sep-13). Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’ was first to get the treatment, but it’s taken another seven months to roll out the second: a profile of ‘Illmatic’ by Nas. As before, the feature offers interviews with various artists, producers and industry folk: in Nas’ case that means the rapper himself, as well as Large Professor, DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Faith Newman – the first three produced various tracks on the album, which is 20 years old, while Newman signed Nas to Columbia Records and oversaw the album. The Landmark feature went live alongside the release of ‘lllmatic XX’ by Sony’s Legacy imprint, with extra remixes and demos.
