Changes are afoot within YouTube at its higher executive levels, with head of product Shishir Mehrotra stepping down from his role this week. “Shishir has taken on an advisory role at Google,” is the official statement from YouTube, after the story broke on tech site Recode. The site makes Mehrotra’s seniority clear: “He is a very big deal, responsible for product, engineering and user experience as well as monetisation functions” – and reportedly also a candidate for the CEO job at YouTube, which was filled this year by another Googler, Susan Wojcicki. Executive changes in this situation are hardly unknown, although a direct replacement for Mehrotra has yet to be announced. Wojcicki is already working on making YouTube pay off better for its key content partners, music included – she recently unveiled the service’s new Google Preferred initiative, which will pre-sell advertising slots on popular channels to big brands (Bulletin, 15-Apr-14).
