The winners of this year’s Webby Awards were announced yesterday, and a number of musicians were celebrating success. De La Soul won a special award as ‘Webby Artist of the Year’ for what the organisers describe as “their bold decision to bypass restrictive copyright regulations regarding sampling by offering their entire discography for free download and showing its fans that hearing the music is more important than paying for it”. Or paying the creators of the songs sampled, of course. Other music winners include Jay-Z’s Magna Carter Holy Grail winning Best Music App; Pharrell Williams scooping two awards for his interactive video for ‘Happy’; Arcade Fire bagging three gongs for ‘Just a Reflektor’; Bob Dylan winning Best Video Editing for the ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ interactive music video; Pandora winning People’s Voice Awards for best music website, best mobile media streaming service and best mobile music app; and Beyoncé winning one for Celebrity Fan.
