Online video industry site Tubefilter has published its latest chart ranking YouTube channels by the number of new subscribers they added in March – an alternative to its other chart sorting them by monthly view counts. Music videos network Vevo had 15 of the top 100 most subscribed channels in March, with Katy Perry second in the overall chart with 865k new subscribers that month – taking her total to nearly 12.2m. Other musicians doing well in these rankings included eighth-placed Shakira (514k new subscribers in March), dance channel Spinnin’ Records (504k), Eminem (405k) and Rihanna (368k). The usual faces, in other words: there appears to be a strong link between the channels gaining most new subscribers on YouTube and the channels racking up most monthly views. That, in turn, reflects YouTube’s shift over the last year or so towards encouraging creators to sign up subscribers, who’ll then see their new videos in a feed on the YouTube homepage.
