Having been criticised as the most high-profile unlicensed lyrics website last year, Rap Genius has been striking a series of deals with publishers – the latest of which is Warner/Chappell Music. Announced last night, it follows previous agreements with Sony/ATV and Universal Music, as well as a deal with the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA). “WCM’s songwriters are unbelievably popular and Rap Genius will help them connect with their most obsessed fans,” said founder Ilan Zechory. “WCM dates back more than 200 years – we think this partnership will last at least another 200.” With its last funding round of $15m coming in October 2012, we suspect Rap Genius’ royalty commitments mean it’ll need another infusion of cash in the near future.
