The latest YouTuber to bag a major-label deal is Peter Hollens, who has specialised in a cappella renditions of popular songs (“I make music using only my voice and mouth,” as he puts it on his channel page) and picked up more than 750,000 subscribers and 63m lifetime views. Now he’s working on his debut album, to be released through the Sony Music Masterworks label in October. “His ideas are fresh and his creative imagination is fearless,” said label SVP Chuck Mitchell in a statement. Hollens has already self-released two albums of his covers, which are available on iTunes and streaming services. He’s also one of the creators to have adopted crowdfunding platform Patreon, where he has 888 supporters and earns just over $4,500 for every video he releases. Sony Music Masterworks has form in the area of signing up YouTubers, with The Piano Guys and 2Cellos among its recent signings.
