Paloma Faith is the latest artist to launch a crowdsourced design contest, working with online site Talenthouse. Faith and label Sony Music are asking designers to create “their own interpretation” of the artwork from her latest album ‘A Perfect Contradiction’. The winner will get £800, tickets plus a meet’n’greet for Faith’s 2015 tour, and “a meeting with a Sony Music creative”. Although this being a design contest, the winning artwork will also be used for a limited-edition poster, a one-week takeover on Paloma’s social networking profiles, and a piece of merchandise. There’s a long-running debate about this kind of thing: is it exploitation of designers – this depends on whether you think £800 is the going rate for this kind of work commercially – or giving new creatives a chance to add a big project to their portfolio? In any case, we suspect there’ll be plenty of entrants for Faith’s contest.
