A grid of streaming songs organised as a chart based on online buzz? Sounds familiar… We Are Hunted’s charts led to the startup being acquired by Twitter to work on its ill-fated Twitter #music app, but now the company’s co-founder Stephen Phillips is out on his own again with a new idea: Wonder.fm. It uses SoundCloud as its base, pulling in the 99 most-played tracks from the last month, with plans to expand into different genres, as well as launching mobile apps. “I just couldn’t help myself. I’m an obsessive music hacker!” Phillips told GigaOm. “My hope is that music fans seeking cool sounds outside the top 40 might find it a really fun app… I am a entrepreneur to my bones, so ultimately, the call of the wild came for me again, and here I am.” With options already to drill down by genre, time and play-counts, it’s likely to appeal to the same tastemakers who got excited about the original We Are Hunted.
