Beauty-focused YouTuber Michelle Phan may be mired in a legal dispute with Ultra Records, but that hasn’t put her off getting more involved with the music industry. Phan, who runs her own MCN, is now working with film-score financier Cutting Edge Group on a venture that will see her acting as a pseudo-label. Which will at least provide a supply of music for her videos that won’t land her in court again. “All she wants is to have people whose music she likes to get to her fan base – she’s the ultimate DJ,” Cutting Edge boss Philip Moross told Billboard. “Our joint business will sign acts, and we might do one song at a time. Artists are going to be partners with us.” Moross is apparently hoping to sign other popular YouTubers to similar deals, which will see his team of supervisors curating soundtracks for their channels, in much the same way that is familiar to the traditional television world.
