Shazam’s main expansion over the last couple of years has been into TV and advertising, but now the company is moving into another new area: radio. The move was announced yesterday through a partnership with US radio group Sun Broadcast Group, which will be the first to use Shazam for Radio. What’s that? “A full-service localized product provided to stations, allowing them to create totally customised, interactive content for their listeners and advertisers,” is how Shazam describes it: essentially a way for broadcasters to inject content into Shazam’s app when listeners are tagging what’s on air. There’s talk of “new revenue streams” for the stations and their advertisers, and the deal also involves Shazam-branded chart shows based on the company’s tag data for specific regions: “hyper-local” charts, which is something you’ve been able to drill down to in Shazam’s app for a while now.
