Rumours have been bubbling for several months now that Yahoo wants to take on YouTube in the online video space, including poaching some of its biggest stars. One of the questions sparked by this is whether this would happen within an existing Yahoo service, like Yahoo Screen. However, this week Business Insider suggested that another Yahoo property is likely to be the venue for any YouTube rivalry: Tumblr. “In this vision, Tumblr would become the exclusive distributor of videos from YouTube stars like JC Caylen, JennXPenn, Teala Dunn, Ricky Dillon, Connor Franta, JackJack, and Bethany Mota,” suggests the article. The theory here being that YouTubers’ main appeal is to young people, and those young people are already more likely to know and use Tumblr than Yahoo Screen. The report warns that there have been delays in rolling out the strategy, partly because YouTube has taken pre-emptive action to keep its biggest stars happy.
