The latest artist to reach the milestone of 1bn streams on Spotify is Pitbull: the third most-streamed American artist on the service behind Eminem and Katy Perry. Sorry, he’s celebrating by hosting an exclusive playlist takeover on Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist, which has nearly 2m followers. Pitbull will be choosing the playlist’s tracks for the next three days: a tactic that’s increasingly popular on the service. While we’re talking Spotify and dancefloor-related topics – *puts away crowbar* – the company has published some new research to accompany its activities at the Amsterdam Dance Event festival. The research explores how Dutch Spotify users are listening to music, drawing up a list of the 100 top ‘distinctive’ Netherlands tracks – those being listened to disproportionately a lot in the country compared to elsewhere. It turns out that more than a third of them are dance music, with many of the others borrowing a few elements from that genre. With familiar Echo Nest wizardry, Spotify has calculated that the Netherlands is the fifth top Spotify market in terms of listening to “mechanized” music, behind only Germany, Lithuania, Guatemala, and Ecuador. which has just put Sash on our internal jukebox yet again for the rest of the day…
