We’re not sure whether it was mischief or good luck that saw the WSJD conference feature back-to-back interviews with Universal Music boss Lucian Grainge and SoundCloud CEO Alexander Ljung yesterday. With no licensing deal having yet been reached between the two companies, the timing was certainly fun. Grainge said that there is an “opportunity for SoundCloud to create incredible revenue” but warned that any deal would be dependent on discussions about “what the business plan is going to be”. Naturally, Ljung was asked about the state of play in the two companies’ relations during the following session. “We won’t have everybody in from day one. Our intention is to create something that’s valuable for everybody and so valuable that everybody wants to be in. We’re not there yet.” How long Universal in particular will give the company to reach that point remains the topic of much debate.
