Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ is the UK’s number one single this week, but also the latest illustration of how streaming is changing the dynamics of the chart. The song has actually spent 19 weeks inside the Official Chart Company’s top 40, having first charted when its parent album ‘X’ was released earlier this year. The OCC notes that the track has built and built since then, with nearly 14m UK streams and 356,000 sales to date, including more than 1m weekly streams for the last three weeks in a row, with 1.6m last week. ‘Thinking Out Loud’ also illustrates changing dynamics of digital music in another way: taking the now-familiar formula of 100 streams per sale, its 356,000 sales are swelled by an additional (nearly) 140,000 equivalent-sales through streams.
