When Spotify announced plans to roll out its family plan last month, industry observers noted two things: Rdio has had a similar offering for a long time now, but Spotify was undercutting its price. But put an emphasis on the “was” there, for Rdio has just dropped its family plan pricing to match its rival. An Rdio subscription for two, three, four or five people now costs respectively $14.99, $19.99, $24.99 or $29.99. “We’ll be rolling out the new pricing across the globe starting today, just in time for the holiday season,” explained Rdio in a blog post, complete with a celebratory playlist featuring the Bee Gees, Sister Sledge, the Jackson 5 and other “family bands” (but unaccountably no Jedward). It remains unclear how popular such family plans have been in driving subscriptions, but now two services are trying, hopefully we’ll find out.
