There are more changes coming to Facebook’s news feed algorithm, and they’re likely to leave some marketers howling. It’s based on a recent survey of Facebook users: “People told us they wanted to see more stories from friends and Pages they care about, and less promotional content… a lot of the content people see as too promotional is posts from Pages they like, rather than ads.” You can see where this is heading, can’t you, although Facebook was keen to stress that people won’t see more ads as a result of the changes, which will penalise posts that are just about getting people to buy a product or install an app; enter promotions and sweepstakes with “no real content”; or which reuse the same content from ads. “Pages that post promotional creative should expect their organic distribution to fall significantly over time,” it explained. We suspect some page owners will shift their efforts to native video, at least until that gets similar changes in the algorithm (which it surely will, in time).
