SoundCloud has changed a lot over the course of 2014, in terms of its design. The company had one more tweak in store before the end of the year though: a new feature called Collection. “We designed Collection to make it easy for you to build your own home on the web for your favorite music & audio,” explained a blog post. “Follow artists, like tracks and playlists, build your own playlists of favorite tracks, and be the first to hear what’s new from your favorite creators.” For now, the new feature is only available on SoundCloud’s website and iPhone app, with Android to follow. What’s interesting is the move back towards the idea of a music “collection” – a path trodden before SoundCloud by Rdio and Spotify, to name but two. That old debate about access versus ownership? It seems there’s still mileage in giving people the semblance of “ownership” even when they have access to a huge catalogue of music.
