Sasha Frere-Jones is one of the more august music critics in the US, but being poached from his existing berth at the New Yorker wouldn’t usually be cause for a Music Ally story. But Frere-Jones’ destination makes it up our street: he’s been hired by Genius (formerly Rap Genius) to build its editorial team in the role of executive editor. “My remit is going into the lyrics site and building a team,” he told the New York Times, outlining his plans to build a team of three or four journalists to move the lyrics-annotation service towards “that Twitter moment when suddenly the smart kids stop holding their noses up in the air and they take part, and it just improves”. Genius currently claims 40m monthly unique visitors, having raised $40m of funding last year as it rebranded.
