Lyrical annotations service Genius has a new user, and he’ll be familiar to many of you: Rick Rubin. The famous producer has been adding his studio memories to a selection of tracks on the service, with anecdotes about Jay Z, Slayer, Beastie Boys, Kanye West, System of a Down and Johnny Cash.

For students of music history, it’s fascinating stuff: and another sign of how what would have traditionally been restricted to traditional journalism interviews is now finding new routes to fans – see also Spotify’s series of classic-album interview profiles, or Google Play’s documentary about The Clash. We expect more of this from Genius, too: it recently hired music critic Sasha Frere-Jones to oversee its editorial side, and with the ability to verify profiles, it’s on a drive to sign up more celebrities.
