How much money did YouTube make in 2014? $4bn of revenues but no profit according to the Wall Street Journal, which cites two sources for the figures. The piece claims that YouTube is currently running at “roughly break-even” despite it’s growth to one billion monthly viewers.
There are some good stats deeper in the piece, too: for example the claim that despite that one-billion-viewers figure, some advertisers still think YouTube’s core audience is too narrow: “9% of viewers account for 85% of online-video views,” according to one analyst. The piece also suggests that YouTube is mulling a non-music subscription service, but also “a plan to tap Google’s data to target ads more effectively” to drive more growth in 2015.
