Late last year, digital distributor TuneCore acquired a startup called DropKloud, which focused on location-based promotions where artists could “drop” tracks and other content for fans to discover at specific locations (Bulletin, 18-Dec-14). This week, the app officially launched again during SXSW. 

The main features remain the same: artists drop “Klouds” of content that are geo-fenced, so that fans can pick them up when they’re in the right place. In this case, rare tracks, exclusive photos and behind-the-scenes video clips. For now, DropKloud is a standalone app used to discover everything that’s been shared using the tool. We wonder if in the long-term, the technology will also find its way into other apps – those of artists, for example.
