It’s the heavyweight app battle of a generation! Except not that heavyweight, it turns out, as live-broadcasting apps Periscope and Meerkat are still only used by a tiny section of smartphone users? How tiny? Figures from 7Park claim that Periscope was being used by 0.5% of American iOS users at the start of April, compared to 0.1% for Meekat.

Or, to put it more bluntly, even if their user bases were completely separate, 99.4% of American iOS users would be on neither app. TechCrunch takes a kinder view of these stats (as it must, given its championing of both apps) suggesting that “growing to even half a percentage point in a matter of weeks is a strong launch for a new app”. It does show the scale of the task to grow more though: Vine currently reaches 5.4% of American iOS users, Twitter 19% and Snapchat 29.8% according to its piece.
