We’ve been writing about Smule and its social music apps for years, gauging its value as a marketing channel for artists and labels. A popular Facebook video provides more evidence that the  company is worth a look. Smule has been working with Jessie J via its Sing! karaoke app: she recorded half the lines to her song from movie Pitch Perfect 2, leaving fans to contribute the other half in virtual duets. One of them, a British teenager called Tom Bleasby, did a pretty good job, and saw his efforts posted on Jessie’s Facebook page – reaching 8.4m views in a week. Bleasby is seizing on his three minutes and 21 seconds of fame, claiming to be “bombarded” with requests from record companies. We suspect that labels with the right kinds of artists should be just as keen to bombard Smule with partnerships enquiries as it builds its network out.
