A range of filesharing websites are suddenly being blocked by Google’s Chrome browser on the grounds that they may contain “harmful programs”. KickassTorrents, Torrentz and ExtraTorrent are among the sites triggering a big red warning screen, without any announcement from Google. “The site ahead contains harmful programs.

Attackers on kat.cr might attempt to trick you into installing programs that harm your browsing experience (for example, by changing your homepage or showing extra ads on sites you visit),” explains the warning message for KickassTorrents. Google is pointing journalists to a blog post published in February outlining an expansion of its warning messages for “deceptive” sites. Music rightsholders will welcome the news of Google doing something more to tackle piracy, even if in this case, any piracy happening on these filesharing sites is not the prime motivation for the blocks.
