File under: huh. Russia is a country not known for its rigorous and all-encompassing approach to copyright protection but measures could be put in place to block YouTube in the country. It relates to TV shows owned by the TNT network that were ripped and uploaded to YouTube back in April and then Russian telecoms watchdog Roskomnadzor ordered the site to pull them down.

A follow up by the body this month found at least 140 links to infringing copies of the broadcaster’s content and so it initiated steps to block YouTube. It said in a statement, “Notification with a request to remove the unlawfully placed materials has been repeatedly directed at the administration of the Internet resource. Currently, access to the illegal videos has not been limited.” Torrent Freak says that next Monday (27th July) YouTube pages will start to be added to the Russian national register of copyright violators. Those in the music industry will be surely watching all of this unfold with eyebrows arched into the heavens as they have often complained that trying to protect their content online in the country is like being handed a thimble and pointed to a well at the top of a hill when your entire town is on fire.
